Sunglasses lenses and their properties: What matters?
Remember that when buying sunglasses lenses, you shouldn't just go by how well you like your sunglasses. Protecting your eyes from UV radiation and glare is crucial to avoid long-term health problems. Here we give you an overview of what is important when it comes to sunglasses lenses and what you should look out for.
The most important factor in sunglasses lenses is protection against ultraviolet radiation (UV). Make sure that the lenses offer 100% UVA and UVB protection to protect your eyes from the harmful effects of the sun. The sunglasses lenses of your YQU are CE-certified and offer protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
The tint of the lenses influences how much light they block. The choice of tint depends on your activities and the light conditions. Darker tints are more suitable for intense sunlight, while lighter tints are more useful in weaker light.
We use a light transmission factor of between 8-18% for our lenses. The light transmission factor is an important factor when choosing sunglasses lenses, as it influences the brightness and quality of vision. Choosing the right tint depends on personal needs, activities and the light conditions in which the sunglasses are worn.
A light transmission factor between 8-18% means that the lenses in question transmit between 8% and 18% of the incident light and block the rest. This range corresponds to a medium to strong darkening and is typical for sunglass lenses with a tint suitable for general use in bright light conditions.
Sunglasses lenses can be made of different materials, including glass, polycarbonate and plastic. Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of weight, break resistance and optical quality. Our sunglasses lenses are made from the plastic CR39.
This plastic has several advantages over other materials:
- CR-39 offers good optical clarity, which means it transmits light well and allows for clear vision. This material is generally less prone to optical distortion compared to some other plastic lenses.
- Lightweight: CR-39 is lightweight, which makes lenses more comfortable to wear. Heavy lenses can be uncomfortable and put pressure on the nose bridge and ears.
- Scratch sensitivity: CR-39 lenses are more sensitive to scratches than some other lens materials. For this reason, our sunglasses lenses have an additional scratch-resistant coating to increase the longevity of the lenses.
Scratch resistant coatings can increase the longevity of your sunglasses lenses and ensure they stay clear and sharp for longer. Our lenses are both scratch-resistant and shatterproof to ensure maximum safety for you and your eyes.
The size of the sunglasses and, accordingly, the sunglasses lenses have a major impact on protection from the sun's rays. It is best to choose sunglasses that offer sufficient coverage to protect your eyes from side sunlight and wind.
